An Ocean Ov Putrid, Stinky, Vile, Disgusting Hell is the debut LP by the American band Plasmodulated. The band began as a side project of Myk Colby (Wharflurch) that came to life in 2021. In 2022 they released the demo Plasmodulated, and soon after Colby decided to bring in more musicians to perform live.

The debut LP gathers 10 tracks for a 40-minute journey of cosmic, technical, atmospheric, and at times raw old school death metal, with small psychedelic nuances.

On first listen, comparisons with the cosmic death metal of Blood Incantation were inevitable, but on the second listen there’s more than that: an old-school tech-death sound with a strong personality of its own, born from deep old-guard influences—cosmic and technical touches—but also some progressive details and even thrash elements, among others. This blend conjures a putrid cosmic desert that crushes the very flesh off our bones.

Right from the opener, Enveloping Effluvium, the band sets the tone in a heavy, dense way: morbid riffs, harmonics crying for salvation, blazing solos, a quickened pace, drums and bass pummeling our stomachs, and dragged, putrid vocals.

The subtle use of synthesizers throughout the album boots the soul out of the body and into a journey through the cosmos of rotten insanity.

Verdict:

An Ocean Ov Putrid, Stinky, Vile, Disgusting Hell is a huge and promising kick-off for Plasmodulated: excellent technical execution, above-average songwriting, and outstanding production make this a record that leaves you wanting more from the band. It’s a must-hear that will please any fan of technical death metal.
