Labyrinthine is the third outing from the North American band Faetooth. Considered a hidden gem, the band has just released the successor to the excellent Remnants Of The Vessel.

This new work is made up of 10 tracks, with a total running time of nearly 55 minutes of what they themselves call fairy doom!

From the very first listen, there’s no doubt: reducing Faetooth merely to doom is a mistake and may set up misleading expectations. Their sound is dense, cold, and sludgy, yet at the same time light and hazy, as if a fairy were enchanting us with her clean vocals. The slow pace of the album gradually unfolds and grows, becoming a pleasure for attentive listeners, but perhaps somewhat monotonous for those who approach it without focus.

That seems to me to be the album’s main issue: it doesn’t always manage to hold the listener’s attention. It lacks clear, striking moments of brilliance. Not that they don’t exist, they do, and in abundance, but they require a very specific mindset and attentiveness to be appreciated, and that can be a challenge.

With each listen, the album grows. New details emerge every time: if the vocals first capture our attention, the bass is what adds weight, grit, and vitality to each track.

My favorite track is White Noise, which features harsher secondary vocals and a more driving rhythm. In my opinion, it is the most distinctive song on the album, slowly corroding us with moments of headbanging and an ethereal guitar solo that almost transports us into a black metal dimension. Still, I feel guilty singling it out, as most of the tracks are excellent.

Verdict:

In summary, Labyrinthine is another work of exploration, without a fixed genre, but one that, in my opinion, leans strongly toward the -gaze universes. It is clearly not going to be universally embraced by the doom community, but in the end it proves to be an outstanding record when given a more dedicated listen.
