This album has already been out for a few months, having been released on 13 March by From The Urn Records on vinyl and digitally. Fangus is a Canadian quintet, and Emerald Dream is their debut LP.
I really needed to highlight this work. When I first heard the track “Pyre of Love,” it got stuck on repeat for quite some time.
Fangus does not reinvent the wheel, but they mix a lot of rock genres, ranging from psych and occult rock to acid rock and even doom, all within an organ/keyboard-based sound. The result is an amazing old-school-sounding rock record.
The organ/keyboard is simply amazing and is what makes Fangus really special. Not that the rest of the musicians are weak, everything is good, but the organ/keyboard sounds like it is carrying the music and cleary is what highlights Fangus. The vocalist is amazing, clearly influenced by the great rock singers of the '70s, while the guitars are excellent, with some really cool solos. The drummer has quite a prog vibe, and it's delicious, while the bass does its job quite well, adding some doom-ish vibes here and there.
Emerald Dream starts as a stoner-psychedelic dream, full of love, but it slowly starts turning into something darker, more doom-occult, and eventually ends with some drama, as if this dream were telling us some kind of story.
Overall, Emerald Dream is a great, great record for stoner, doom, and '70s rock enthusiasts. This one definitely has to go into my personal collection.
I want more Fangus!
